Aggressive Walleye Fishing Secrets for Rip Jigging
Aggressive Walleye Fishing: Rip Jigging In Thick Weed Beds
Hi, Andrew Martinsen from Walleye Fishing Secrets here.
This is a tactic employed by some of the top professional walleye anglers when the fish are not in a finicky mood.
It’s always a good idea when you’re out on the water to experiment with different ways to catch these fish. After all, when you’ve experimented with a ton of different techniques, you can then have the experience of knowing what works for you on your lake depending on the conditions you find yourself in.
As walleye techniques go, the technique of rip jigging is quite aggressive, but if the Walleye are active it can be very successful as well.
Use a jig which weighs at least a half ounce or more.
Simply cast this into the thickest areas of weeds, and then use long pulls to rip the jig right through the weeds.
The bait used must stand up to rough treatment, and most live baits will not do the trick.
For this technique use bucktail styles, which will stand up to the aggressive handling better.
The speed you use while trolling will vary, but this technique allows for wide latitude.
If the Walleye are active and interested, they will hit the bait no matter what speed you are trolling at.
Using a crawler harness and trolling this across the top of the weeds, high enough to avoid snagging but low enough for the Walleye to spot, can also be effective.
Slower trolling speeds may be needed with this technique though, because the bait is slightly above the weeds.
